Every year, since 2001, Unicef France has been organizing a program called “Frimousses, les poupées qui sauvent les enfants” (Little Faces, the dolls that save children). Children, grandparents, students, teachers, volunteers, associations, companies, charities, fashion designers and world renown artists, all come together to create rag dolls. Each doll created is given a name and an identity. Then the doll is adopted and the money collected goes to pay for children’s vaccinations in Darfour.
Since 2003, some very famous fashion designers have been participating in the project “Frimousses de Créateurs”. They make their ‘designer dolls’ which are then auctioned off, all profits going towards vaccinations for children. Before being auctioned off these dolls have been on exhibit at the Petit Palais this week. The ‘designer dolls’ will be auction off this coming Thursday at Drouot Montaigne. A few years ago some of the dolls went for €10,000 !! Regular dolls usually get adopted for €20.

This morning the boys and I went to see these very special dolls for this thirteenth day of Art Every Day Month. It was a great outing. We took the n°42 bus (a first for the three of us). I’ve been to the Grand Palais several times, but it was the first time I went to the Petit Palais. It is a beautiful building, resembling the nearby Grand Palais. The Petit Palais is the Fine Art museum of Paris.

I think being creative for a cause is a great idea, and I am excited about this activity! I have already downloaded my doll pattern and ID card and am thinking of ideas for next year’s project (dolls are accepted from about January till June of each year). Maybe Thibault will be able to help me or do a doll of his own. Since transportation seems to be his thing, maybe we can design stuffed car pillows – who said a doll had to be a real doll form! The possibilities are endless!!
